Cervids are central to the livelihoods of many communities around the world. Yet, while the biology of many species has been extensively studied, their personality remain largely unexplored.

In this paper we present a review of existing personality studies in cervids highlighting that, despite their ecological importance, research on deer personality is scarce and focused on a limited number of species and traits.
We summarized the methodologies used, the personality traits investigated (primarily Boldness and Coping styles), and the main research goals, which include exploring physiological, genetic, socioecological, and fitness correlations of personality.
Our review underscores the need to expand research to a wider range of deer species and employ more comprehensive assessment methods to better understand deer biology, inform management strategies, and contribute to the broader understanding of personality across species, including humans.
