Out in the great world: A tale of fallow deer and a lot of bad ideas

In this study, we examine the global distribution and dietary habits of the fallow deer.
Despite being one of the most widespread mammals globally, and posing various potential threats to ecosystems where it has been introduced, a comprehensive update on its distribution has been missing since 1980. We compiled existing literature on the species' distribution and feeding preferences, remarking that distribution is poorly documented outside of Europe, and information on their diet is also often outdated or scarce.
Through a bibliometric analysis, we identified common research themes surrounding fallow deer, including their role in farming, hunting, and the diseases they may carry, often in comparison with other deer species.
This review highlights the urgent need for updated research on the fallow deer's population and diet to better understand and manage its ecological impact."
