The stranger sheep coming from the Sahara

The story of a desert sheep up to no good

In this study, we reviewed information on the worldwide presence of the aoudad -or Barbary sheep- outside its native range.

Our work highlights the distribution and abundance of these introduced populations, noting that their establishment success varies geographically. We also discuss the potential negative impacts of alien aoudads on native ecosystems and human activities, including competition with native species, damage to crops, and disease transmission. Finally, we provide management recommendations, emphasizing the importance of prevention, early detection, and controlled culling to mitigate these impacts.
