Sika deer: a tenacious invader that's hard to eradicate

Sika deer are among the most widespread introduced cervids. Let's see where they live, what they eat and how to get rid of them!

Here are presented two of our studies offering an overview of the sika deer examining its status as both a native and invasive species across the globe.

In the first study (available here), we analyze the global scientific literature on sika deer, highlighting key research areas. our results show that the most relevant and recently-investigated topics deal with hybridization with native species (e.g., red deer) and the sika's impact on vegetation in both its native and non-native range.

The second study (available here) focuses specifically on the management success of sika deer in the Czech Republic using hunting bag data, evaluating trends in different subpopulations and concluding that current hunting efforts are insufficient to control the growing population, especially in certain areas, and that better management strategies and data collection are needed.
